I wish more foreign language films got a wider release, and Korean film especially because I have lost count of their varied and fascinating successes since I saw JSA, MEMORIES OF MURDER, and others, until I lucked out and found MUSA (the North America DVD suffers by losing a half hour or so of running time).
THE TIGER is a film the makers can be proud of. Danny Pudi: Sami Malik, Executive Producer Jon Heder: Alex Womack Rizwan Manji: Babu Rahman Karen David: Ruby Iqbal Sam Page: Kenneth Porter. A film like THE TIGER: AN OLD HUNTER'S TALE also benefits from the usual stellar photography, so we believe the location and how dangerous it is and then with the music it is never over the top needless and repetitive loud and signifying nothing.

The Koreans know how to tell a story they know how to pull out all the stops, and very often they take their story somewhere you were not expecting. The humans are so ably played and stereotyping avoided that it is surprise, the tiger is so immediately and continually seen as real, with feelings, and actions determined by emotions that we, the audience, can help but root for the tiger.
The seventh and title character is The Tiger. Choi Min-sik Jeong Man-sik Kim Sang-ho Seong Yu-bin Jung Suk-won Ren Osugi Kim Hong-pa Lee Na-ra Jung Ji-so Ra Mi-ran. Father and son the leader of the Korean hunters and his lieutenant and one Japanese General and his Korean aide. There are really only six characters of note in this film lasting 135 minutes before end credits. Set in Northern Korea, with Japan occupying this small country, in 1925, Japanese and Koreans, military and civilian forces have their own, and varied reasons why, and why not to hunt down the one remaining tiger. A young Indian man relocates to 1970s Chicago to become an engineer, but when his job falls through, resorts to an elaborate charade with misfit friends in order to woo his childhood sweetheart. I am sure there is at least one more component.

I do wish that it had a broader distribution.Were I teaching I would use this hugely entertaining Korean film to discuss story elements such as man vs man man vs the environment man vs himself. The story is very heartening, and serves as a reminder of the optimism one carries and humanizes the hardships that many experience upon immigrating to the U.S.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that the cast that includes Dani Purdi, Rizwan Manji, Jon Heder, and Karen David, is amazing. It seems the film’s theater distribution is limited, so please check out their Facebook page for screening information. That she is one of a small handful of Muslim women filmmakers, makes this film a definite accomplishment. The story was inspired by her father’s story, and Khan set out to create a film where the main character is Muslim. I was struck by her take on an immigrant story set in the late 1970s/early 1980s. I believe that if you want to see more diversity in Hollywood and popular media, then you have to do your best to support media that reflects those sensibilities.
